Q: I’m very confused about dual core processors. There’s dual core and Core 2 duo and Core, etc. How can I make sense of all of this? What is a core?
The Core line of CPUs is either one of the greatest blunders or greatest anti-competition smokescreens it’s ever mustered. I don’t believe that I can think of any marketing move that will confuse, or has confused, consumers more so than Intel choosing the name Core as the next line of Desktop and Laptop processors. First, the difference between a core and Core must be explained. Continue reading ‘How many cores are in a Core and Core 2?’

I’ve just realized that the “Read more of” links aren’t working when in the archives or category view. I’m looking into it. For now, click on the title of the post to read the rest of it.

The short of it: I got what I wanted. Everything, and all in a single phone call, with no Skype recording. It was pretty uneventful actually, so had I posted a recording it would have been quite boring to listen to.
After work on Monday, I went to the local Cingular store. They’re useless. They looked at my account and claimed they didn’t have the ability to alter the terms of my contract. I don’t believe that for a second. Regardless of the outcome, the significance was in my approach. In the emails I contended that it wasn’t my fault and that Cingular had screwed something up behind the scenes. I stuck to that, but worded it more along the lines of, ‘I was being guided through the web based upgrade by a warranty department rep over the phone and something got messed up.’ Continue reading ‘Cingular: The Resolution’

I’ve learned that the only purpose of emailing Cingular’s customer service is to get people’s blood boiling. Well, actually writing them an email is soothing, like having a weight lifted from me, to be trite. It’s the receipt of a response that absolutely pisses me off. They completely disown the situation. There’s no element of a consumer. I think they see customer service emails as the internet’s deification. I wonder if they call their inboxes, litter boxes? In hindsight, emailing isn’t the best approach to actually get a problem solved. I originally went the email route first to have some sort of evidence of an attempt to solve the problem, just in case I had to take it to the executive CSRs. My emails are available for reading by following the ‘read more’ link. Continue reading ‘Cingular: The Emails’

Q: At my new job, I can only use Unix. I have never used it before and have no idea what any commands are! Where do I start?
As sadistic as this may sound, I LOVE that people are getting forced into learning Unix. Diversity is a good thing and learning about other operating systems beyond Windows is a way of diversifying yourself. As scary as Unix may be to a beginner, it’s not as difficult as it seems. The way you learn to use Unix is to use Unix. Only through extended use will you actually learn to use it. There are a few things I should cover before I get into the commands. Things like directory structure and some basic terminology. After I layout some Unix basics, I’ll outline a few necessary commands for the most basic of Unix use, then I’ll cover a more advanced topic that isn’t necessary to master as a beginner. Continue reading ‘How do I learn to use the Unix command line?’
