PC Purchase Series: What is an IEEE card?

IEEE is an international organization made up of engineers that sets standards for the computing industry. For example, wifi is IEEE Standard 802.11. When referring to an ‘IEEE card’ in a computer, it’s actually an IEEE 1394 card, which is otherwise known as ‘Firewire’. It’s similar to USB. Since USB 2.0 was released a few years ago, Firewire has been fading out. Fewer and fewer devices are using the technology since USB 2.0 is faster and backward compatible with USB 1.0. In truth, a Firewire card is not needed, unless you already know you need it for a specific device.
