Series: Buying and Customizing a PC

The other day someone looking into purchasing a new computer asked me a number of questions. Each dealt with the various parts of a computer that many manufacturers now let you customize. This, I thought, would make a great series of posts! A number of the items that he asked about were both included by default and completely unnecessary. Taking out the stuff you don’t need can save a few bucks. All questions will be linked below but you can also find them all in the Series:PC Purchase category.

1) What is a Network Card?
2) What is a WIRELESS 802.11B/G NETWORK CARD do I need this for my new pc?
3) What is a WIRELESS 802.11B/G ACCESS POINT do I need this for my new pc?
4) What is a FLASH MEDIA READER/WRITER do I need this for my new pc?
5) What is a IEEE CARD do I need it for my new pc?
6) What is a ZIP drive do I need one for my new pc?
7) What is the difference between Microsoft XP Home Edition and Microsoft XP Professional which should I get?
